HP Acquires Humane’s AI Technology Despite “AI Pin” Flop

HP has announced the acquisition of key AI capabilities from Humane, the company behind the widely-panned “AI Pin” wearable device. This move, which includes Humane’s AI-powered platform Cosmos, technical talent, and over 300 patents and applications, aims to integrate AI into HP’s printers and conference room equipment.

The “AI Pin,” a small, voice-powered wearable device designed to be pinned to clothing, was touted as a potential disruptor to the smartphone market. However, the device received overwhelmingly negative reviews, citing issues with overheating, stability, and usability. The device, which included features like a camera, speaker, and a “laser ink” projector to display information, was ultimately a commercial failure. A recall of 10,500 devices in October 2024 due to the risk of the charger’s battery catching fire further damaged the product’s reputation.

Despite the “AI Pin’s” failure, HP saw value in Humane’s underlying AI technology. The acquisition, which was rumored in June, is intended to advance HP’s goal of becoming a more experience-led company by leveraging the acquired AI capabilities.
