Homemade Explosives in NYC Man Arrested for Bomb Threat

A Long Island man was arrested after police discovered several homemade explosives in NYC placed at different locations across Manhattan. Michael Gann, 55, now faces serious federal charges for making and placing bombs, including one found on a subway track.

Police first found an explosive device on the subway tracks near the Williamsburg Bridge. Soon after, officers discovered five more bombs and some shotgun shells on a rooftop in the SoHo neighborhood. Security cameras captured Gann carrying a bag as he walked across the rooftop where authorities say he placed the devices.

Officials revealed that Gann purchased large amounts of materials commonly used to build explosives. He ordered about two pounds of potassium perchlorate, one pound of aluminum powder, more than 200 cardboard tubes, and roughly 50 feet of fuses. Using these supplies, he allegedly assembled at least seven bombs.

One of these devices contained around 30 grams of explosive powder, which is nearly 600 times the legal limit allowed for consumer fireworks. When police arrested Gann, they found a seventh bomb on his person. He then lied to officers, saying he had thrown away the other explosives in a dumpster somewhere in Manhattan.

Federal authorities also reviewed Gann’s online activity. They found many searches related to buying guns and ingredients for explosives during the two months before his arrest.

Gann now faces multiple charges. These include attempted destruction of property with an explosive, which carries a prison sentence ranging from five to 20 years. He also faces charges of transporting explosive materials and unlawful possession of destructive devices. Each charge can result in up to 10 years in prison.

U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton emphasized that protecting New Yorkers remains a top priority. He praised law enforcement for their quick action, which prevented any injuries or damage caused by the homemade explosives in NYC.

This case highlights ongoing efforts to keep the city safe from potential threats. Authorities continue to investigate the full scope of Gann’s plans and whether he had any accomplices.
