Google Wallet Drops PayPal Support in the US

Google Wallet users in the United States will soon face a major change. They will no longer be able to use PayPal accounts linked to the Google Wallet app for payments. Google quietly announced this update on a support page recently spotted by Android Authority. The company will automatically remove all PayPal accounts linked to Google Wallet on Android devices soon. Users should prepare now for this significant shift in payment options.

This change started earlier this year when Google stopped allowing US users to link new PayPal accounts directly to Google Wallet. However, users who linked their PayPal accounts before then could still pay with PayPal. That grace period will end soon, when Google Wallet completely stops supporting PayPal payments in the US. After that, users must switch to other payment methods for purchases and subscriptions.

Interestingly, Google’s support page shows that users in Germany can still link PayPal accounts to Google Wallet. This means Google is limiting this change to US customers. The company has not explained why it made this decision. Some speculate that Google wants to focus on other partnerships, reduce processing costs, or comply with new regulations.

Google advises affected users to update their payment methods immediately. It recommends adding at least one credit or debit card to Google accounts. This step will help users continue making purchases and managing subscriptions without interruption. If users fail to update their payment info, they risk losing access to PayPal payments within Google Wallet.

Despite ending direct PayPal support in Google Wallet’s US app, the platform will keep supporting PayPal-branded debit cards. These cards let users spend their PayPal balance wherever Mastercard is accepted. Cardholders also earn 5% cash back on gas, groceries, and more. This indicates Google and PayPal will maintain a limited partnership.

In summary, US Google Wallet users should act quickly to update their payment settings soon. This change reflects how digital payment services evolve rapidly. Staying informed and prepared helps users avoid disruption and keep enjoying smooth payment experiences.
