Ghana Temporarily Closes Embassy in US Amid Visa Scam Investigation

Ghana temporarily closes embassy in Washington, DC following allegations of a long-running visa fraud scheme. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa made the announcement after receiving an internal audit report.

According to the minister, the audit uncovered a serious scam operated from within the embassy. A locally recruited staff member allegedly redirected visa applicants to a private firm. That firm charged extra fees without the foreign ministry’s knowledge or approval.

Applicants were charged between $30 and $60 for basic services. The proceeds went directly into the private account of the implicated staffer. The scheme reportedly lasted for five years, exploiting Ghanaian citizens and other applicants.

Ablakwa confirmed that Ghana temporarily closes embassy operations for several days. This pause will allow for a full restructuring of staff and procedures. All locally hired staff have been suspended, and diplomats posted to the mission have been recalled.

The minister emphasized that the misconduct was reported to the attorney-general. Legal action is expected, including possible prosecution and recovery of funds. Officials are determined to ensure full accountability and restore trust in the embassy’s services.

The fraudulent web link, which mimicked the official embassy site, funneled users to an outside payment system. There, they unknowingly paid unapproved charges to a third-party vendor working with the accused staffer.

Ghana temporarily closes embassy not just for cleanup, but also to implement a system overhaul. Ablakwa promised new protocols to safeguard the integrity of consular services going forward.

He also reaffirmed the government’s stance on corruption. President John Mahama’s administration, he said, maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy toward abuse of office and conflicts of interest.

As the investigation continues, Ghanaian authorities aim to rebuild public confidence. The scandal has sparked anger among citizens who relied on the embassy for essential services.
