Authorities say the Melissa Fireside case has taken a shocking turn after the former Oregon county commissioner allegedly fled the country with her young son. Officials claim she vanished while facing multiple felony charges connected to a $30,000 theft from her mother’s boyfriend.
Investigators say the theft occurred in March 2025 at an assisted living facility in Clackamas County. Fireside reportedly accessed the victim’s bank account during a visit, helping him reset his online login before transferring funds. Prosecutors allege she withdrew $29,000 to repay a personal loan from a state representative and moved another $1,000 into her own account.
The suspicious transactions came to light when the victim’s daughter noticed irregular activity and alerted the credit union. That report triggered a full investigation by the Oregon Department of Justice, leading to multiple felony charges.
According to court records, the Melissa Fireside case escalated dramatically last week when authorities learned she may have escaped Oregon. The DOJ said she possibly used a fake ID to cross into Mexico. Officials added that she had booked a flight from Mexico to Amsterdam just before vanishing.
Her ex-partner, the father of her nine-year-old son, told prosecutors that Fireside withdrew the boy from school and disappeared without notice. He expressed deep concern for his child’s safety and alerted the district attorney’s office immediately.
Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said law enforcement agencies are coordinating internationally to find her. “No one should be able to evade justice by crossing a border.”
The DOJ has filed a motion to revoke Fireside’s conditional release, which had required her to stay within Oregon unless given permission to travel. Her trial was scheduled to begin on December 2.
