Ford Moves Its Headquarters in the U.S. After Seven Decades

Ford has announced a major move for the first time in seventy years. The company will relocate its headquarters just three miles away in Dearborn, Michigan. Moreover, the new 2.1-million-square-foot structure will officially carry the name “Ford World Headquarters.”

The new campus will adopt the current headquarters’ name, “Henry Ford II World Center.” Furthermore, the change honors the legacy of Henry Ford’s grandson, who helped shape the company’s modern history. The facility will integrate Ford’s corporate leadership, engineering teams, and design units.

The company’s current headquarters, located at 1 American Road, has stood since 1956. At that time, it ranked among the largest single-company office buildings in the United States. In addition, Ford employees often referred to the structure as “The Glass House.”

Ford’s heritage and brand manager Ted Ryan confirmed the new headquarters will keep the 1 American Road address. Therefore, the company maintains continuity while embracing modern facilities. Ryan also emphasized Ford’s commitment to developing vehicles that define future generations.

The new campus sits five to ten minutes away from the old site. It places 14,000 employees within a short walk of the main building. Moreover, the headquarters design encourages collaboration by colocating design, engineering, and leadership teams.

The facility will feature six design studios and a massive food hall spanning 160,000 square feet. In addition, employees will access wellness rooms, mothers’ spaces, and over 300 advanced meeting rooms. These spaces aim to promote both productivity and employee well-being.

Ford’s move follows a broader trend in Detroit’s auto industry. General Motors also announced a headquarters relocation, shifting into downtown Detroit. As a result, both automakers highlight new priorities focused on innovation and modern workspaces.

The new headquarters sits on the site of Ford’s former Product Development Center. When dedicated in 1953, the facility attracted national attention. Moreover, it became the birthplace of iconic vehicles like the Mustang, Thunderbird, and F-Series trucks.

Dearborn continues to hold deep ties with Ford’s history. Company leaders often stress that Dearborn and Ford remain inseparable in American culture. In addition, Henry Ford himself was born just a few miles away from today’s headquarters.

Ford executives describe the move as a family milestone as well as a corporate step. Thousands of employees will soon walk into a new home while carrying the brand’s legacy forward.
