Firefighters Ambushed at Idaho Blaze At Least 2 Killed

At least two people died after firefighters ambushed at Idaho blaze faced gunfire while responding to a wildfire. The incident occurred at Canfield Mountain in Coeur d’Alene, about 30 miles from Spokane, Washington.

Firefighters arrived in the early afternoon to tackle a brush fire. However, roughly 30 minutes later, a shooter or possibly multiple shooters opened fire using modern sporting rifles. The attack shocked the emergency teams on site.

According to the local sheriff, the situation remained active as law enforcement continued to face sniper fire well into the afternoon. The gunmen showed no signs of surrender, making the rescue operation more dangerous and complex.

Sheriff Robert Norris explained that officers spotted bullets coming from different directions, indicating several shooters might be involved. He promised to neutralize the threat as quickly as possible.

Officials are now investigating if the fire was deliberately set to lure firefighters into an ambush. This disturbing possibility adds a grim dimension to an already tragic event.

Edward A. Kelly, president of the firefighters’ association, confirmed two firefighters died and a third was in surgery. He described the attack as a “heinous act of violence.” Additionally, several others sustained injuries, while hikers and local residents remain trapped on the mountain.

Authorities urged civilians to avoid the area and follow shelter-in-place orders south of Hayden Lake Road and east of 15th Street. Rescue efforts continued as officials tried to help those stranded and bring the situation under control.

The FBI announced it was sending tactical support to assist local law enforcement. Meanwhile, Sheriff Norris warned that this could turn into a multi-day operation due to the ongoing threat.

Idaho Governor Brad Little condemned the attack and asked residents to pray for the victims and their families. He also urged people to stay clear of the area to let emergency teams work safely.

The firefighters ambushed at Idaho blaze now face one of the most dangerous threats they have ever encountered. The incident highlights the extreme risks first responders sometimes confront while protecting communities.
