Fire Under New Jersey Train Causes Panic and Hospitalizations

A fire under a New Jersey train erupted early Monday morning, sending commuters into panic and disrupting train service. The blaze broke out at about 6:19 a.m. at the Newport Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH) station in Jersey City. Consequently, thick smoke quickly filled an eastbound train, forcing passengers to evacuate onto the platform.

According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the fire started beneath the train’s cars. Immediately, PATH employees and the Jersey City Fire Department rushed to the scene. They treated about 13 people for smoke inhalation on the platform. Of those, nine needed hospital care for further evaluation.

Because of the fire, PATH suspended service on two major lines: the Hoboken-World Trade Center and Journal Square-33rd Street routes. This shutdown lasted until 11 a.m., disrupting thousands of daily commuters who depend on these trains. As a result, many passengers scrambled to find alternate ways to reach their destinations.

Dramatic footage quickly spread on social media. The videos showed frightened passengers fleeing a smoke-filled train car. Furthermore, flames burned visibly beneath the train. Eric Robinson, a witness, described seeing many passengers holding their chests. Around a dozen people received oxygen treatment at the scene. He said, “I’m surprised nobody got trampled, given the thick smoke and chaos inside.”

Additionally, some witnesses reported hearing a “loud explosion” moments before the fire started. One passenger shared on social media that the fire was far worse than smoke alone. They wrote, “This was not just smoke. The cart before me was literally in flames.”

Authorities immediately launched an investigation to find the cause of the fire. They continue working to make sure the system remains safe for all passengers. Meanwhile, repairs and inspections continue as PATH service gradually returns to normal.

Overall, this fire under a New Jersey train has had a significant impact on the community. It caused serious injuries and widespread fear during a busy travel time. Although commuters expressed relief that the situation did not become worse, many called for improved safety measures. Therefore, the Port Authority said it is reviewing protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.

In the meantime, riders remain cautious but hopeful that PATH trains will soon operate without issues. Indeed, the fire under a New Jersey train serves as a strong reminder of how quickly emergencies can disrupt daily life and transportation.
