A fallen hero tribute is underway in North Carolina after a police officer died protecting others inside a hospital. The shooting occurred Saturday morning at the WakeMed Garner Healthplex, located just outside Raleigh.
According to Garner police, 59-year-old Officer Roger Smith was on duty in the emergency department lobby when a gunman opened fire around 9 a.m. Consequently, medical staff and patients scrambled for safety. Despite the danger, Officer Smith confronted the suspect to protect others and lost his life in the process.
Authorities identified the shooter as 29-year-old Garner resident Benji Martin Jr., who now faces a murder charge. Moreover, police stated that Smith’s actions likely prevented a larger tragedy and saved additional lives.
Garner Police Chief Chris Adams praised Smith’s bravery and dedication. He said Smith devoted his career to protecting others and showed remarkable courage in his final moments. “Officer Smith put the safety of others before his own,” Adams said.
Meanwhile, hospital staff described Smith as a hero whose quick actions prevented further harm. In response, medical personnel and community members began a fallen hero tribute near the hospital entrance Saturday evening, leaving flowers and blue ribbons in his memory.

The WakeMed Campus Police Department and Garner Police continue to support Smith’s family while investigating the shooting.
