Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, will soon bring its Grok chatbot to Telegram chats. Telegram’s CEO, Pavel Durov, announced the new partnership on Wednesday. Under the agreement, Telegram will host Grok for one year across its platform. In exchange, xAI will pay Telegram $300 million in cash and equity. Telegram will also receive 50% of the revenue from xAI subscriptions sold via Telegram.
Durov shared this news on X, formerly known as Twitter. He said Grok will launch on Telegram by this summer. Although the deal may seem uneven, it allows xAI to reach Telegram’s massive user base. Durov estimates Telegram has over one billion active users worldwide. This partnership lets xAI expand its audience quickly and efficiently.
Generative AI companies have made huge investments in recent years. As a result, they now focus on growing their users to recoup costs. Elon Musk’s xAI launched Grok 3, the latest version of its chatbot, in February. Musk hopes this new version will gain traction in the crowded AI market. Grok 3 directly competes with popular chatbots such as ChatGPT and China’s DeepSeek.
This rivalry sets Musk against Sam Altman, who once partnered with him but now leads OpenAI. Currently, xAI offers Grok on Musk’s X platform but limits free users. The premium subscription costs $40 per month or $395 per year. By partnering with Telegram, xAI aims to attract users beyond the X platform.
Meanwhile, Pavel Durov has faced legal challenges in France. French authorities targeted Telegram over illegal content on the service. The case includes accusations of French interference in Romanian elections. Additionally, French officials denied Durov’s request to travel to the United States for investment talks. Authorities blocked his trip due to ongoing legal disputes.
This partnership between Telegram and xAI represents a major step toward integrating AI into messaging apps. It shows growing interest in blending social platforms with advanced AI tools. As Grok joins Telegram, users can expect an innovative AI chat experience. The deal also highlights the fierce competition shaping the AI chatbot market today.
