DOGE Says GSA Saves $1M by Ditching 70 Year Old Tech for Digital Records

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has saved $1 million by converting decades old magnetic tape storage into modern digital records, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced Friday.

In a post on X, DOGE stated that 14,000 magnetic tapes some using technology dating back nearly 70 years have been digitized as part of a broader initiative to eliminate wasteful government spending. The GSA, which provides office space, transportation, and administrative services for federal agencies, has been targeted for modernization under DOGE’s aggressive efficiency program.

Led by Elon Musk, DOGE is tasked with auditing and overhauling outdated and costly government practices. The agency has recently drawn both praise and scrutiny for its rapid and sometimes controversial reforms.

In another cost cutting measure, the GSA announced Thursday it would save an additional $4.5 million by “optimizing leases and reducing our footprint,” citing large volumes of unused federal office space.

Despite the financial wins, some Democrats have criticized DOGE’s approach. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.) said this week he “does not believe” the department is handling federal reform responsibly, even accusing the group of undermining core agencies like Social Security.
