Dies a Hero: Off-Duty Officer Killed in NYC Shooting

A tragic shooting shook New York City when Didarul Islam, an off-duty police officer, died a hero after a gunman opened fire inside an office building at 345 Park Avenue. The attack claimed four lives and left another critically injured.

Didarul Islam, 36, was a devoted father of two. His wife is currently expecting their third child. Islam immigrated from Bangladesh and had served the NYPD for three and a half years. Mayor Eric Adams described Islam as a true New Yorker who loved the city deeply.

“He died a hero,” Adams said during a press briefing. The mayor highlighted Islam’s faith and commitment to protecting New Yorkers. “He was saving lives,” Adams added, emphasizing the officer’s dedication.

The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, entered the building’s lobby and immediately began firing. Islam confronted him, trying to stop the violence. Tamura then moved through the building, shooting at several others before taking his own life.

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch praised Islam’s bravery, saying, “He was doing the job we asked him to do.” She confirmed the incident involved a lone shooter and that no ongoing threat exists to the public.

Besides Islam, three other people were killed: one man and two women. Their identities remain private until families are notified. Additionally, four others sustained injuries while fleeing and were treated at local hospitals. Tisch also mentioned that Tamura had a known history of mental health issues. The motive behind the shooting remains under investigation.
