A deadly California wildfire that burned massive land started after a man killed a woman he met online. Victor Serriteno met Priscilla Castro through a dating app. She vanished after going to meet him.
Her family tried calling her but got no response. Concerned, they reported her missing. Police found her abandoned car in Vacaville.
A wildfire broke out near Highway 128 around the same time. It spread fast, destroying land, homes, and animals. Officials named the fire the Markley Fire.
The deadly California wildfire eventually consumed over 250,000 acres. It also caused the deaths of two men, Douglas Mai and Leon “James” Bone.
Their bodies were found in their homes after the flames passed. The Markley Fire later merged with nearby wildfires and formed a massive fire complex.
Authorities later found human remains in a remote area where the fire started. They discovered an angel pendant near the body. Castro’s family confirmed the pendant belonged to her.
Investigators matched the remains to Priscilla Castro using forensic evidence. They believe Serriteno killed her in his home after the date.
He then drove her body to a remote area and set it on fire. That act started the wildfire that followed.
Police arrested Serriteno soon after finding the remains. Prosecutors charged him with murder and arson. He later pleaded no contest to all charges.
A court found him guilty of three murders and multiple arson counts. He faces 73 years to life in state prison.
Castro left behind a 9-year-old daughter. Her family described her as a loving and strong woman with a bright spirit.
Authorities haven’t confirmed her exact cause of death. However, they say she died the night she met Serriteno.
The district attorney said the verdict brings some justice and closure to the victims’ families. Serriteno will return for sentencing.
This case shows how one violent act can create massive destruction, including a deadly California wildfire that affected many lives.
