DC Crime Crackdown: 70 Arrested in Trump’s Labor Day Safety Surge, Including Immigrants

A major DC crime crackdown occurred on Labor Day. Federal agents arrested 70 individuals in Washington, D.C. This operation included 27 illegal immigrants. Many faced assault and stalking charges. The Trump administration directed this sweeping action. It follows an executive order from March. That order established a safety task force.

A White House official provided details. Many arrested had prior criminal histories. These included assault and driving while intoxicated. Others violated anti-stalking orders. Some had fraud and burglary charges. One person had assaulted a 77-year-old woman. Another had attacked a police officer. Several had domestic violence records.

Over 3,200 officials from 22 agencies participated. This DC crime crackdown is part of a larger effort. President Trump declared a public safety emergency in August. He invoked the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. This placed the city’s police under federal control. He also deployed National Guard troops.

The operation’s strategy focused on high-crime areas and targeted individuals with existing warrants. Consequently, authorities reported a significant drop in violent incidents over the holiday weekend. However, civil rights groups have already voiced strong opposition. They argue the sweeps encourage racial profiling and question the legality of the federal takeover.

To date, total arrests now number 1,669. Authorities arrested 16 known gang members. They also rescued five missing children. Officers cleared 50 homeless encampments. Trump praised the results on Truth Social. He declared D.C. a “crime free zone.” He also commended Mayor Muriel Bowser for her cooperation.

The mayor initially feared the federal plan. However, she later acknowledged its noticeable impact. She appreciated the surge of officers. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also celebrated. She said violent crime has plummeted. She believes Democrats should take note. The mayor’s office declined to comment further.
