Attorney General Pam Bondi has launched a major legal response. On Monday, she directed her staff to take action following the criminal referral from Tulsi Gabbard. The referral alleges a coordinated effort to falsely tie former President Donald Trump to Russian election interference.
Bondi personally instructed a federal prosecutor to begin legal proceedings. That prosecutor will now present evidence to a grand jury. This step could lead to formal charges if the jury finds enough cause. Fox News Digital reviewed a letter confirming Bondi’s decision. A source familiar with the situation also backed the report.
The Department of Justice did not issue a detailed response. However, a spokesperson said Bondi takes the criminal referral from Tulsi Gabbard very seriously. According to the DOJ, there is strong cause for concern and a need for immediate action. Two weeks ago, the DOJ acknowledged receiving the referral.
The referral included a detailed memo. It was titled “Intelligence Community Suppression of Intelligence.” It argued that Russian and criminal actors did not affect the 2016 election through cyberattacks. It’s also claimed intelligence officials misled the public with a false narrative.
In July, Tulsi Gabbard declassified key intelligence. She said the Obama administration pushed a misleading story that Russia supported Trump’s 2016 campaign. During a press briefing, Gabbard stated that the narrative was “contrived” and presented to the public as truth. The documents pointed to former President Obama directing officials to build an intelligence assessment after Trump won. That assessment stated that Russia’s goal was to create distrust in the democratic system not to change the election outcome. Even so, the information helped launch years of investigations into Trump’s campaign.
Gabbard also claimed that Obama and his security officials laid the foundation for this false story. The criminal referral from Tulsi Gabbard now shifts the focus back on those early decisions. Former intelligence leaders like John Brennan, James Clapper, and James Comey are under renewed scrutiny. As the grand jury process begins, the nation watches closely. The Justice Department must now decide what, if any, charges to pursue.
