An English man will spend life in prison after he killed his girlfriend. Kieron Goodwin, 33, strangled Olivia Wood, 29, just hours after she planned to leave him. As a result, the court sentenced him to a minimum of 35 years in prison for the murder.
Goodwin and Wood had been in a relationship for less than three months when Goodwin murdered her at his apartment in Frome, Somerset. Authorities discovered Wood’s packed bags, which clearly indicated she intended to leave him. Tragically, she died in the hospital shortly after Goodwin strangled her. An autopsy later confirmed a fatal dose of cocaine in her system and injuries consistent with strangulation.
In addition to the murder charge, Goodwin faced several other serious offenses. He had already pleaded guilty to charges of controlling and coercive behavior toward Wood and three other victims. Furthermore, the court convicted him of rape, sexual assault, and other criminal offenses related to these victims.
Survivors of Goodwin’s abuse described a clear and disturbing pattern of manipulation and control. Initially, he showered them with affection, but soon after, he began revealing struggles with his mental health. This would escalate into abusive behavior, including threats that he would harm himself if they left. Prosecutors highlighted how Goodwin kept his abusive actions discreet, making it difficult for others to recognize the signs.
Kyra, one of Wood’s sisters, shared a moving victim impact statement in court. She explained how Goodwin preyed on Olivia’s kind nature, knowing she could not abandon someone who might harm themselves. Moreover, Kyra pointed out that her sister’s tragic death might have saved another woman from a similar fate.
Astrid, the victim’s mother, spoke of Olivia’s loving nature and deep passion for protecting animals. She described her daughter as beautiful and confident, knowing exactly where she wanted to be in life. Olivia’s kindness was a source of purpose and inspiration for her family.
As a final step toward justice, the court granted indefinite restraining orders for Goodwin’s surviving victims. This sentencing sends a strong message about the devastating consequences of abusive behavior. It also underscores the dangers of controlling actions, which can lead to tragic outcomes.
