CIA Operations in Venezuela Escalate Tensions

CIA operations in Venezuela have escalated tensions between Washington and Caracas after President Donald Trump confirmed authorizing secret missions targeting Nicolás Maduro’s regime. The move signals a sharp intensification of the United States’ long-standing campaign to pressure the Venezuelan government.

Trump stated that his administration approved covert CIA operations in response to alleged Venezuelan drug trafficking and prisoner releases into the US. However, these claims remain disputed by experts and international observers. During a press briefing, Trump hinted at possible land strikes, saying the US was “looking at land,” without clarifying further plans.

In response, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro condemned the operations, calling them “coups d’état orchestrated by the CIA.” Addressing citizens in Caracas, he urged peace and national defense, announcing new military drills to protect key infrastructure and communities. Maduro’s remarks highlighted growing fears of US intervention in the region.

Lawmakers in Washington reacted strongly. Senator Jeanne Shaheen criticized the administration for bypassing congressional approval, arguing that covert CIA operations risked dragging the US into another conflict. She emphasized the need for transparency and oversight before any potential military escalation.

At least 27 people have died in recent US-led strikes on vessels in the Caribbean. Trump claimed the attacks targeted “narcoterrorists” from the Tren de Aragua gang, though no concrete evidence was presented. United Nations experts later warned that the strikes violated international law and could constitute unlawful killings.

The controversy has strained diplomatic relations across Latin America. Neighboring countries urged restraint, warning that any further US intervention could destabilize regional security. Analysts suggest the situation may fuel anti-American sentiment and embolden Maduro’s supporters at home.

As tensions rise, questions persist about the limits of CIA operations and the potential consequences of open conflict. Both nations appear unwilling to step back, raising concerns about a prolonged standoff.
