ChromeOS Android Merger Out: Google Confirms Plans

Google has officially confirmed plans to merge ChromeOS and Android, signaling a major shift in its operating system strategy. Sameer Samat, President of Google’s Android Ecosystem, shared this news during an interview with TechRadar. When asked why the reporter used Apple devices, Samat explained that Google wants to better understand how people use their laptops and manage their devices. He then revealed that Google will combine ChromeOS and Android into a single platform to improve user experience.

This announcement clears up long-standing rumors that began circulating in late 2024. Reports back then suggested Google was working on a multi-year project to transition ChromeOS fully into Android. However, the company never made this official until now. The ChromeOS Android merger will likely create a more seamless experience across all Google devices, allowing users to enjoy better compatibility and integration.

Earlier this year, Google started merging parts of the Android kernel into ChromeOS. This move aimed to enhance AI features and speed up performance on Chromebooks. Now, Google plans to deepen this integration and fully merge ChromeOS into Android. As a result, future Chromebooks could run this unified system, offering even better Android app support. In addition, Google might improve how Chromebooks work with Android smartphones, creating a more connected ecosystem.

Moreover, leaks reveal Google is developing a Pixel Laptop, internally called “Snowy.” This new device might feature a premium design and run the combined ChromeOS Android platform. Recently, Google has also introduced several desktop-like features on Android devices. For example, Android 16’s first Quarterly Platform Release will bring a desktop mode for multi-window multitasking on external displays. This feature will extend to tablets, making them more useful as desktop replacements.

Despite the official confirmation, Google’s ChromeOS Android merger will take time. The company will likely spend years perfecting the platform before releasing it widely. Therefore, users should not expect any major announcements during the rumored Pixel 10 launch event this August. Still, Google’s commitment to this merger shows its dedication to improving cross-device experiences and delivering a powerful unified operating system through the ChromeOS Android merger.
