Chief Justice John Roberts delivered a firm defense of the judiciary on Wednesday in his hometown of Buffalo, New York. He reminded the nation that judicial independence matters more now than ever. His comments followed recent attacks from political figures critical of federal court decisions that delayed parts of President Donald Trump’s agenda.
Speaking to a packed room of over 600 judges and attorneys, Roberts declared that the Constitution’s strength lies in its balance. That balance, he said, only works when courts remain free from pressure. “This system fails,” he noted, “if judges are not independent.”
His remarks echoed earlier statements but came at a critical moment. In recent months, some of Trump’s allies have called for the impeachment of judges they oppose. Roberts addressed this directly, repeating a key point: impeachment is not a tool for political disagreement.
Meanwhile, judicial independence matters was not just a statement. It was the theme that underlined every concern Roberts raised. He mentioned threats to judges’ safety and the disturbing trend of public intimidation. For example, some judges have received fake food deliveries to their homes — a tactic designed to reveal personal addresses.
Adding context, Roberts also referred to past incidents that shook the judiciary. One such case involved the tragic killing of a federal judge’s son in 2020 by a disgruntled attorney. This event left a lasting mark and reinforced the risks judges face when performing their duties.
Although Justice Roberts remained composed, he did not shy away from the reality. Attacks on the judiciary, including from Trump, have grown louder. Trump recently used social media to label one judge a “radical left lunatic” for blocking a deportation policy.
Roberts, however, praised his colleagues for staying focused on their work. He also confirmed that he does not plan to retire anytime soon. His ongoing leadership, he assured the audience, will continue to emphasize integrity.
His words followed another powerful speech last week by Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson. She, too, condemned what she described as the “relentless attacks” on judges nationwide. Jackson avoided naming names, but her meaning was unmistakable.
As the Supreme Court prepares for more major cases, Roberts reiterated one truth three times: judicial independence matters. Without it, he warned, the system itself begins to crumble. With trust in institutions faltering, the judiciary, he said, must stand firm.
In closing, Roberts called on legal professionals to support the courts. He urged everyone to defend the rule of law against political interference. His message was clear, concise, and deeply urgent.
