A heartbreaking maritime accident has taken the life of a young cadet from the Mexican Navy. The Brooklyn Bridge ship crash occurred on the evening of May 17 in New York City.
América Yamilet Sánchez, a 20-year-old Navy cadet from Veracruz, Mexico, died in the incident. Shortly afterward, Governor Rocío Nahle García confirmed her death and expressed deep sorrow. She extended support to the family and thanked the Navy for its efforts.
The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. when the Cuauhtémoc training ship struck the Brooklyn Bridge. According to officials, the ship lost power just before the impact. As a result, the crew could not stop the vessel in time.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams spoke soon after the crash. He explained that the mechanical failure caused the loss of control. Moreover, he confirmed that emergency crews responded quickly to the scene.
Rescue teams from the fire department treated 19 people with injuries. Unfortunately, two remain in critical condition. Additionally, two individuals died, including Sánchez.
