Britain and Mauritius Near Agreement on Chagos Archipelago Following U.S. Approval

The UK and Mauritius are finalizing an agreement to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands, with the deal now formally approved by US President Donald Trump. Downing Street confirmed the arrangement, stating that discussions with Washington have concluded and negotiations with Mauritius are nearing completion. The breakthrough follows Trump’s private meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer in February, where he signaled support despite initial skepticism.

The deal, which reportedly could cost the UK up to £18 billion, ensures continued British and American access to the strategically vital Diego Garcia airbase for at least 99 years. While critics argue the UK is surrendering territory it legally owns, officials maintain the agreement resolves legal uncertainties stemming from a non binding International Court of Justice ruling favoring Mauritius. The base remains critical to US-UK security operations in the Indian Ocean.

The timing offers Starmer temporary relief as his government braces for potential US tariffs later this week a move Trump has provocatively dubbed “Liberation Day.” With the treaty’s financial terms still undisclosed, opposition figures warn the arrangement may prove costly, but ministers insist it safeguards military interests without burdening taxpayers.
