A tragic boating incident in Possession Sound, Washington, has left two people dead and one person still missing. The Everett Police Department led the response with help from several agencies.
The victims included a man in his 60s and a woman in her 40s. They had joined a 26-foot boat for a shrimping trip. The boat began taking on water near the Possession Sound shoreline and quickly sank.
Rescue teams are still searching for the boat owner’s son, a man in his 20s. He disappeared during the boating incident and is presumed drowned.
Meanwhile, a fourth person, a man in his 50s, survived. A nearby boater rescued him from the water. He was checked by medical staff and cleared of serious injury.
The boating incident occurred about 200 feet from shore, roughly 29 miles northwest of Seattle. Witnesses immediately called police after seeing the boat go under.
According to Everett Police spokesperson Natalie Given, the group had been shrimping before the boating incident began. However, investigators still haven’t determined the exact cause of the sinking.
Divers later located the boat 165 feet below the surface, flipped upside down. The Everett Police worked with the nonprofit Innerspace Exploration Team to recover the vessel and the bodies.
Multiple agencies responded to the boating incident, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Everett Fire Department, and rescue crews. The search used drones, helicopters, rescue swimmers, and boats.
Chief John DeRousse thanked the teams involved. He said their efforts brought some peace to the families affected by the boating incident, though the search continues.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner is reviewing the recovered bodies to determine the official cause of death. Names of the victims have not yet been released.
