America Party plans paused less than three months after Elon Musk introduced the concept to millions of his online followers. According to sources familiar with the situation, Musk now wants to focus on his companies and avoid splitting conservative voters.
The Wall Street Journal reported that Musk privately expressed concern about damaging his relationship with Vice President JD Vance. Vance is widely viewed as the political heir to the MAGA movement. Musk’s advisors reportedly warned him that launching a third party might weaken the GOP ahead of the 2026 midterms.
Although the party’s launch has been paused, sources say Musk hasn’t ruled it out entirely. He may revisit the idea later. Musk’s time at the Trump White House officially ended on May 30, after months spent working with the Department of Government Efficiency. While his departure appeared cordial, tensions quickly surfaced. Just days later, Musk criticized a Trump-backed spending bill on X, the social media platform he owns.
He called the legislation a “disgusting abomination” and accused lawmakers of betraying public trust. Musk continued posting memes and sarcastic remarks aimed at the bill and its supporters. On June 5, Musk posted a poll asking whether the U.S. should create a new political party. The next day, he declared, “America needs a new political party to represent the 80% in the middle.”
He asked the same question again on July 4, using another poll to measure public support. This time, 65.4% voted “yes,” down from 80.4% in June. Still, on July 5, Musk announced, “I formed the America Party to give you back your freedom.” Trump reacted sharply on July 6, calling Musk a “train wreck” and dismissing the viability of third parties. Despite the public clash, their relationship seemed to improve by late July. Trump posted supportively about Musk’s companies, saying he wanted them to “thrive like never before.”
Although the public tension has cooled, Musk’s political intentions remain uncertain. For now, America Party plans paused, and both leaders appear focused on different goals. As the 2026 midterms approach, America Party plans paused may return to the spotlight if political winds shift again.
