Hot Dogs are Very Slippery: Pennsylvania Highway Crash Cleanup

A multi-vehicle accident on Interstate 83 in Pennsylvania caused chaos when thousands of frozen hot dogs spilled across the highway. The crash happened just north of the Maryland border and left four people injured. Emergency crews responded quickly, working nonstop to clear the highway and reopen traffic as soon as possible.

A tractor-trailer carrying a massive shipment of frozen hot dogs experienced a mechanical issue while traveling on the interstate. The driver lost control and collided with another vehicle. Then, the truck scraped the concrete divider separating the lanes. This impact tore open the trailer’s side, causing boxes of frozen hot dogs to scatter across the roadway.

Shrewsbury Volunteer Fire Company Chief Brad Dauberman described the cleanup effort and shared an unexpected lesson. He said, “Hot dogs are very slippery — I did not know that.” The frozen hot dogs, once on the road, created a slick surface that made it harder for the crews to safely clear the debris. Firefighters and emergency workers wore safety vests and carried rakes and shovels to gather the hot dogs and broken boxes.

Due to the scale of the mess, crews brought in a front-end loader to scoop up the piled hot dogs and load them into a dump truck. Because the hot dogs were still warm after hitting the road, crews treated them as garbage and discarded them. The cleanup lasted several hours, forcing the highway to remain closed during that time.

Multiple fire companies and emergency teams coordinated efforts to reroute traffic safely around the scene. They worked together to maintain order and protect drivers passing nearby. Four people injured in the crash were transported by ambulance to hospitals, although authorities have not shared details about their conditions.

After crews removed every trace of debris and cleared the vehicles involved, the highway reopened later that day. The incident caused more than just damage to vehicles. It created an unusual hazard due to the slippery hot dogs on the pavement. Chief Dauberman reiterated the surprising challenge, stating again, “Hot dogs are very slippery.”

This unusual accident disrupted traffic and required careful, coordinated action from first responders. Despite the mess, emergency teams handled the situation efficiently and restored normal traffic flow by the afternoon.
