Elon Musk has taken another bold step into U.S. politics by launching the America Party Movement. The billionaire entrepreneur hopes this new party will reshape America’s two-party system. Over the weekend, Musk confirmed a private conversation with Andrew Yang. This talk focused on strategy and goals for the third-party effort.
Surprisingly, Yang is no stranger to challenging political norms. After his 2020 presidential run, he turned away from the traditional parties. In 2021, following a failed New York City mayoral bid, he created the Forward Party. That group has slowly earned ballot access in several states. Yang welcomed Musk’s initiative, saying, “I’m excited for anyone who wants to move on from the duopoly.”
Their discussion signals a possible collaboration. Yang expressed willingness to guide Musk through the complex process of building a new political force. This effort reflects Musk’s increasing involvement in politics beyond his businesses.
The America Party Movement also ties into Musk’s recent role in Washington. During the early months of Donald Trump’s second term, Musk served as a White House advisor. He led the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, aiming to streamline federal operations.
Musk, also the top donor of the 2024 election cycle, contributed nearly $300 million to Trump’s campaign through the America PAC. However, their alliance didn’t last. A sharp disagreement followed Musk’s exit from the White House in May. Musk criticized Trump’s spending bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination.” He claimed Trump would not have won without his support.
Just a day after Trump signed the controversial bill into law, Musk revealed the America Party Movement on his social platform X. He announced plans to run candidates in the next midterm elections.
Trump dismissed the idea. “I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party,” he told reporters. “It’s always been a two-party system.” He argued third parties only bring confusion and rarely succeed.
Despite Trump’s dismissal, Musk remains undeterred. He believes now is the time for a major political shift. The America Party Movement aims to tap into voter frustration with both Democrats and Republicans.
Creating a third party is a long and difficult path. Ballot access laws vary by state and often require major funding and public support. Still, Musk and Yang seem prepared to face those challenges head-on.
With prominent names behind it, the America Party Movement could soon become a real force in American politics.
