Sibling Rivalry in Florida Election as Sister Defeats Brother

A fierce sibling rivalry in Florida election unfolded this week as LaVon Bracy Davis defeated her brother Randolph Bracy in a Democratic primary. The race highlighted family tensions, political legacies, and a surprising mother-daughter alliance.

Ms. Bracy Davis secured 42% of the vote, while her brother trailed with just 12%. Their mother, Lavon Wright Bracy, publicly supported her daughter, even serving as her campaign manager. Meanwhile, Randolph Bracy expressed disappointment, calling his sister’s decision to run “hurtful.”

The district leans heavily Democratic, making Ms. Bracy Davis the likely winner in September. The seat was previously held by Geraldine Thompson, a close family friend and civil rights leader who passed away earlier this year.

The Thompson family endorsed Ms. Bracy Davis, further fueling the sibling rivalry in Florida election. On her campaign site, she framed herself as continuing Thompson’s legacy of justice and progress. In contrast, Randolph Bracy emphasized his father’s political contributions, omitting his mother’s role.

This isn’t the first time family loyalties have clashed. In 2024, Ms. Bracy Davis endorsed Thompson over her brother in another primary race. Now, history has repeated itself but with a decisive victory for the sister.

Sibling clashes in politics are rare but dramatic. In 1871, Delaware’s Saulsbury brothers engaged in a last-minute betrayal that secured Eli Saulsbury an 18-year Senate term. Similarly, Canada saw three sets of siblings compete in 2019, though only one pair faced off directly.

The Bracy race adds to this unusual political tradition. Despite the tension, Ms. Bracy Davis avoided discussing the rivalry publicly, focusing instead on policy and community leadership.

With two other candidates former Congressman Alan Grayson and attorney Coretta Anthony-Smith also in the race, Ms. Bracy Davis’s win was decisive. She now faces Republican Willie Montague in November, though the district’s strong Democratic lean makes her the clear favorite. As the sibling rivalry in Florida election concludes, the Bracy family’s political legacy continues but with a new chapter led by the victorious sister.
