The breach affected users on major platforms such as Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Apple, Instagram, and Snapchat. Cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler discovered the enormous file containing usernames, emails, passwords, and website URLs.

Worryingly, the database existed as an unencrypted plain text file without any password protection. This lack of security allowed anyone with access to easily view millions of sensitive details. Fowler traced the data back to infostealer malware, a popular tool among cybercriminals.
This malware steals private information from infected devices, enabling criminals to launch attacks or sell stolen data. Once Fowler found the file, he immediately notified the hosting provider, who then removed the database from public access. However, the provider refused to reveal the file’s owner, leaving questions about whether the exposure was accidental or intentional.
To confirm the breach’s authenticity, Fowler contacted several people listed in the database. Many confirmed that their passwords and account information had indeed been compromised. This confirmation showed the true extent of the leak’s impact on users. While cybercriminals caused this breach, users must also accept responsibility. Fowler warned that many people treat their email accounts like free cloud storage.
They often save sensitive documents such as tax returns, medical records, and passwords without enough security. This careless behavior increases risks if criminals gain access to their accounts. Therefore, experts recommend using strong, unique passwords and enabling two-factor authentication. They also advise regularly monitoring accounts for suspicious activity to reduce damage.
