Snapchat has unveiled a new feature that brings generative AI-powered video effects to the platform. The company introduced its Video Gen AI Lenses, which offer users a creative and immersive way to enhance their Snaps with cutting-edge AI technology. However, these new video lenses are currently only available to Snapchat’s Platinum subscription tier, which costs $14.99 per month.
According to Snap, these lenses are powered by an in-house built generative video model, which integrates some of the most advanced AI tools currently available. “These Lenses bring the best in generative AI to Snapchatters through a familiar and fun Lens format,” Snap said in a press release.
At launch, users can access three video AI lenses. The Raccoon lens adds animated raccoons into the video, creating a playful scene with furry creatures. The Fox preset features a curious red fox peering over the user’s shoulder, while the Spring Flowers option adds vibrant, photorealistic flowers that bloom in a variety of colors and include a dynamic zoom-out effect to the video. While the selection of lenses is limited at the moment, Snap has promised that new video AI lenses will be added weekly.
There is no indication yet whether Snapchat will allow users to create their own video AI lenses, though the platform already offers a free tool called Lens Studio. This tool allows users to create custom lenses and face filters and share them with the global community. The Lens Studio also includes generative AI capabilities, enabling users to create custom lenses using text or image prompts, similar to how AI models like Gemini or ChatGPT generate visuals based on descriptions.
