DOGE Rolls Out Custom Chatbot to Automate Government Tasks

A new custom chatbot from Elon Musk’s DOGE is being deployed to assist employees of the General Services Administration (GSA) in automating various government tasks. The chatbot, known as GSAi, is designed to help workers draft emails, create talking points, summarize text, and even write code.

GSAi offers users a choice of three AI models—Claude Haiku 3.5 (the default), Claude Sonnet 3.5 v2, and Meta Llama 3.2. The chatbot’s primary function is to analyze contract and procurement data, streamlining operations for the agency.

The rollout comes amid widespread federal job cuts, with the GSA reportedly reducing its workforce by more than 1,000 employees, including around 90 positions within its tech branch. The chatbot was initially tested on a small group of workers last month before being made available to approximately 1,500 employees, with plans to expand its usage further.

Internal memos caution employees against inputting sensitive information into the system, including federal nonpublic information, personally identifiable data, or controlled unclassified information.

The adoption of GSAi reflects a broader trend of integrating AI tools into government operations to increase efficiency and compensate for reduced staffing.
