Missing Family members remain the focus of an urgent search after their small plane disappeared while traveling from the Bahamas toward Florida. Authorities began the search Monday after receiving reports that the aircraft may have gone down near Red Bays in North Andros.
The aircraft reportedly carried four people and departed from Great Harbour Cay at approximately 10:12 a.m. local time. It was heading toward Miami Executive Airport in Florida when air traffic controllers eventually lost contact with the plane.
According to authorities, the aircraft’s last recorded contact occurred around 11:04 a.m. near the western side of Andros Island. Officials said the plane was approximately 13 miles west of the island when communication ended.
Authorities have not officially confirmed the identities of all four passengers. However, relatives identified them as Mario Lamar Sr., 80, his wife Lili Lamar, 79, and their grandchildren, Sofi Sosa, 28, and Christian Sosa, 22.
Mario Lamar reportedly served as the pilot during the flight and had more than 40 years of flying experience. His wife and grandchildren traveled with him as the family prepared to return to Florida after their weekend stay.
The family reportedly spent the weekend at a second home they own on Great Harbour Cay. They planned to fly back to Florida after the visit, but the aircraft disappeared before reaching its destination.
Concern reportedly increased when relatives did not receive confirmation that the family had arrived safely. A family member had exchanged messages with one passenger before departure but later became concerned when further messages failed to reach them.
Authorities received reports at approximately 2:20 p.m. that an aircraft may have gone down in waters near Red Bays, North Andros. Officials then began coordinating information about the aircraft, its route, and its last known position.
The Royal Bahamas Defense Force requested assistance from the United States Coast Guard during the search. Meanwhile, the Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association received information about the missing aircraft and worked with authorities to support the operation.
However, difficult weather conditions created additional challenges for rescue crews. Officials said unfavorable conditions prevented some search activity from continuing, so teams postponed operations until the weather became more suitable.
