A Missouri foster mom will avoid prison after receiving a suspended sentence for child endangerment. Brenda Deutsch received a seven-year prison sentence on September 3, but the judge suspended it. Instead, she must complete three years of state-supervised probation and counseling. The judge also revoked her foster-parent license following the sentencing hearing.
Lincoln County Judge Thomas Frawley stressed that Deutsch’s conviction did not involve trading a child for a monkey. Instead, prosecutors charged her with endangering the welfare of a child. Deutsch pleaded guilty to first-degree child endangerment on June 15. Under her plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed two additional child abuse or neglect counts.
According to court documents, the conviction involved the placement of a foster girl in Texas. Deutsch allegedly sent the girl to a home without proper supervision. Investigators also described the residence as unsanitary and unsafe for the child. Texas authorities eventually intervened and removed the girl from the home.
However, the case attracted significant attention because investigators heard allegations about an alleged child-for-monkey exchange. Authorities learned about that rumor during an investigation into the girl’s absence from school. The judge later emphasized that Deutsch did not face a conviction for trading the child. He said the conviction focused specifically on the unsafe placement.
During sentencing, several people described allegations involving Deutsch and her treatment of children. Her biological daughter, Brina Johnson, also spoke during the hearing. A former foster child reportedly shared allegations about Deutsch as well. Johnson said she expected a different outcome and felt disappointed by the sentence.
Meanwhile, Johnson claimed she provided investigators with information about the alleged monkey trade. She also said she showed authorities a photograph involving Deutsch and a monkey. According to Johnson, her mother had owned at least seven monkeys. Those allegations, however, did not form the basis of Deutsch’s child-endangerment conviction.
The investigation began after Missouri authorities received an anonymous report in November 2024. The report alleged that Deutsch physically and mentally abused the foster girl. During a forensic interview, the girl described several alleged incidents involving physical punishment. She also claimed Deutsch sometimes failed to provide enough food and gave away clothing.
Later, a school resource officer investigated the girl’s prolonged absence from school. The investigation eventually revealed that the child had traveled to Texas. Authorities then learned about the alleged rumor involving an exotic animal. The Texas woman caring for the girl said she had agreed to help Deutsch temporarily.
However, the arrangement later became difficult for everyone involved. The Texas woman reportedly decided she no longer wanted responsibility for the girl. Deutsch initially refused to pay for the child’s return flight, according to investigators. A purchased ticket reportedly went unused after transportation arrangements failed.
The Texas woman later left the girl with another person while she traveled out of town. On February 21, that person brought the child to the Eastland Sheriff’s Office. Texas Child Protective Services then took custody of the girl. Investigators said the child had sometimes remained alone while caring for exotic animals.
As a result, the Foster Mom case raised concerns about supervision and child safety. Deutsch’s foster-parent license now remains revoked following the court’s decision. She also faces separate allegations involving forgery and theft. Those charges relate to claims that she submitted false invoices for respite-care services.
Investigators allege Deutsch received $962.50 from the state through those invoices. The charges remain separate from the child-endangerment conviction. Meanwhile, Deutsch’s attorney argued that extensive public attention had seriously damaged her reputation. He also maintained that media portrayals did not accurately represent his client.
For now, Deutsch will serve probation rather than entering prison. She must follow the conditions imposed by the court during the three-year period. The sentencing also formally ends her ability to serve as a foster parent. The case nevertheless continues through the separate forgery and theft allegations.
The Foster Mom sentencing highlights the distinction between the allegations surrounding Deutsch and her actual conviction. The court found her guilty of child endangerment based on the Texas placement. However, the judge specifically rejected the idea that she was convicted of trading the child for a monkey.
