Authorities accused 22-year-old Ervin Joaquin Gutierrez of killing his 25-year-old cousin, Nathaniel Cavazos, following a disagreement about which family member had prepared the spicier enchiladas. According to investigators, several relatives had gathered together to cook green chile enchiladas and spend time together. However, the disagreement between the two cousins reportedly became increasingly tense before developing into a physical confrontation.
Investigators said Gutierrez had traveled from Roswell to Albuquerque to prepare the meal with family members. During the gathering, Gutierrez and Cavazos reportedly began arguing about the food they had prepared. Witnesses told investigators that the disagreement continued before the situation became more serious. Authorities later alleged that Gutierrez shot Cavazos during the confrontation as the victim attempted to move away. Police received reports of gunfire and arrived at the apartment complex shortly before 11 p.m. local time. Cavazos died at the scene, according to authorities.
Gutierrez allegedly left the location before officers arrived. However, investigators later identified him as a suspect and arrested him on Aug. 29.
