Vice President JD Vance will attend the commemoration in New York, while other administration officials will visit Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, the White House said officials will represent the administration at ceremonies honoring victims across the country.
The anniversary marks 25 years since al-Qaida militants hijacked four planes during coordinated attacks against the United States. Nearly 3,000 people died during the attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Arlington, Virginia. The events also reshaped American foreign policy and significantly changed national security priorities for decades afterward.
Trump explained his decision after reporters asked why he would not attend the New York ceremony. He answered that he would instead travel to the Pentagon for the anniversary observance. His comments clarified plans that had prompted questions about his schedule for September 11.

Last year’s schedule also changed unexpectedly for Vance because of another major event. He had originally planned to attend the New York ceremony before traveling to Salt Lake City. However, the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk changed those plans.
As a result, Vance traveled to Utah to support Kirk’s family instead of attending the anniversary ceremony. This year, however, the vice president expects to participate in New York’s annual remembrance.
The upcoming 9/11 anniversary carries particular significance because it marks a quarter-century since the attacks.
