Atoms Names Former Uber Finance Chief Gautam Gupta as CFO

Gautam Gupta Joins Atoms as chief financial officer, strengthening the robotics and industrial AI startup following its recent funding milestone. The leadership appointment marks another step in the company’s effort to expand operations and build its executive team for future growth.

Gupta announced the move on Wednesday through social media. He confirmed that he will oversee the company’s financial strategy while supporting its long-term expansion plans. His appointment follows Atoms’ recent $1.7 billion funding round, which attracted strong attention across the technology industry.

Gupta previously served as chief financial officer at Uber during Travis Kalanick’s leadership. He worked at the company for more than four years before leaving in July 2017. Earlier that year, he had already announced plans to step away from the ride-hailing company.

Before joining Uber, Gupta worked as a vice president at Goldman Sachs. During that time, he invested in Uber in 2012 before officially joining the company the following year. His financial experience later helped guide Uber through an important period of rapid expansion.

The appointment continues a familiar hiring pattern at Atoms. Kalanick has gradually reunited with several former colleagues who previously worked alongside him at Uber. As a result, the company’s leadership now includes multiple executives with shared experience from earlier ventures.

Earlier this year, Atoms also acquired autonomous mining technology startup Pronto. Anthony Levandowski, a former Uber and Google self-driving engineer, leads that company. Consequently, the acquisition strengthened Atoms’ expertise in automation and industrial robotics.

The company itself previously operated under the name CloudKitchens before adopting the Atoms brand. Since the rebranding, Kalanick has outlined broader ambitions focused on robotics, industrial automation, transportation, mining, and food production technologies.

When announcing the recent funding round, Kalanick described the investment as another important milestone in a longer business journey. He explained that Atoms builds upon ideas first explored during his years at Uber before continuing through CloudKitchens.

Meanwhile, Uber also participated in the latest funding round as an investor. Although the company has not publicly disclosed its investment amount, the participation represents another business connection between Uber and its former founder.

Kalanick resigned as Uber’s chief executive in 2017 following a period marked by internal controversies and workplace complaints. Despite that history, business relationships between several former executives have continued through new technology ventures.

Gupta also announced that he will leave the venture capital firm A*, which he co-founded in 2020. According to his statement, the investment firm made its largest-ever investment by backing Atoms during the recent financing round.

Furthermore, Gupta praised Kalanick’s leadership and entrepreneurial approach in his announcement. He credited Kalanick with creating a new transportation market by overcoming major regulatory and operational challenges throughout Uber’s early years.

Looking ahead, Atoms plans to focus on robotics, artificial intelligence, transportation, mining, and food-related technologies. The company has shared broad goals while continuing to develop products across several industrial sectors.

The Gautam Gupta Joins announcement highlights Atoms’ strategy of building an experienced executive team. Investors and industry observers will likely monitor how the company transforms its recent funding into future technological growth and commercial expansion.
