Rockstar Co-Founder Says Players Should Have Physical Games

Physical Game Releases remain an important topic across the gaming industry as more publishers expand digital distribution. Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser recently shared his views, saying companies should continue offering physical editions whenever players still want them.

Houser discussed the issue during an appearance at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Although he explained that he does not personally favor one format over another, he believes gaming companies should respect consumer preferences. Therefore, he argued that publishers should continue producing physical copies if demand remains strong.

According to Houser, player choice should remain an important part of the gaming experience. He explained that many consumers still enjoy collecting boxed editions and owning a tangible copy of their favorite titles. Consequently, he sees value in supporting both physical and digital formats whenever possible.

At the same time, Houser acknowledged the advantages that digital distribution has introduced across the gaming industry. Developers can release updates more quickly, address technical issues faster, and improve games after launch. As a result, players often receive a smoother experience than previous console generations allowed.

Even so, Houser believes those technical benefits do not eliminate the appeal of physical ownership. Many players continue collecting games, displaying them on shelves, and preserving them for future use. Therefore, he feels companies should recognize those preferences instead of focusing exclusively on digital platforms.

The discussion comes during a period of significant change across the video game market. Several major publishers have increased digital distribution while reducing support for traditional retail releases. Consequently, debates surrounding game ownership and preservation have become increasingly common among gaming communities.

Recent announcements regarding future game distribution have intensified those conversations even further. Some publishers plan to reduce physical production in coming years, while others continue expanding download-only releases. Therefore, many players have questioned whether boxed editions will remain widely available.

Rockstar Games has also attracted attention because Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch without a traditional disc version. That decision surprised many longtime fans who expected a physical edition alongside the digital release. Nevertheless, Houser’s comments suggest he still appreciates offering players multiple purchasing options whenever practical.

Former Rockstar producer Lazlow Jones also participated in the conversation and shared a balanced perspective. He recalled the excitement of opening a newly purchased game while also praising the convenience of digital downloads. For example, travelers can quickly install games before long flights without visiting a retail store.

Jones explained that digital libraries provide flexibility for modern players who frequently move between devices. However, he also admitted that creating a physical product delivers a unique sense of accomplishment for developers and creators. Holding a finished item, whether a game or another creative project, offers satisfaction that digital products cannot always match.

Houser later added that he personally enjoys physical media despite recognizing the strengths of digital technology. His remarks reflected a balanced approach rather than criticism of changing industry trends. Instead, he emphasized giving players options based on individual preferences instead of forcing a single purchasing method.

The conversation highlights an ongoing debate that continues shaping the future of gaming. While digital technology offers convenience and continuous updates, Physical Game Releases still attract collectors and dedicated fans. As publishers evaluate future strategies, consumer demand will likely influence how Physical Game Releases evolve in the years ahead.
