Brockman has already been overseeing product decisions on an interim basis. He stepped into this role while OpenAI executive Fidji Simo remains on medical leave. During this period, he helped guide key product direction across teams.
OpenAI confirmed that Simo is still involved in strategic discussions. She continues to contribute while on leave. However, Brockman now leads day-to-day product strategy and execution.
The company is also working to unify its main tools into a single system. These tools include ChatGPT, Codex, and the company’s API platform. Leaders want to reduce fragmentation and improve integration across services.
In a staff memo, Brockman outlined the company’s direction. He emphasized strong product consolidation across teams. He also said OpenAI is focusing on an “agentic future” for AI systems.
This strategy follows earlier comments from CEO Sam Altman. He previously declared a “code red” focus on improving ChatGPT. After that, OpenAI paused several experimental projects.
The company stopped work on some side initiatives, including the Sora video tool. It also reduced focus on other research projects. This allowed teams to concentrate on core products.
OpenAI says the restructuring aims to improve efficiency. It also helps teams coordinate more closely. Leaders believe this will speed up development and product delivery.
