Elon Musk reignited a political firestorm by resurfacing Kamala Harris’ past comments supporting censorship. This comes as Harris now criticizes what she calls an attack on “free speech” following the Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension.
Recently, Disney pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! off the air indefinitely. In response, Vice President Harris immediately condemned the move. She then accused the Trump administration of pressuring media networks behind the scenes.
“What we are witnessing is an outright abuse of power,” Harris wrote on X. Furthermore, she warned that the administration uses fear to silence dissent. Finally, she argued that the American public deserves better and must not accept this kind of suppression.
Musk quickly responded. He reposted a tweet Harris made in 2019 during Trump’s first term. At that time, she was still a senator from California and running for vice president. “Look let’s be honest, @realDonaldTrump’s Twitter account should be suspended,” Harris wrote on September 30, 2019.
Musk added only a thinking face emoji to the post, but the message was clear. He and many others questioned Harris’ current position on free speech, pointing to her prior support for silencing Trump online.
The suspension of Kimmel’s show came shortly after his sharp criticism of conservatives. Specifically, he accused them of trying to shift blame in the assassination case of Charlie Kirk, allegedly carried out by Tyler Robinson. Moreover, Kimmel claimed that the MAGA movement was deliberately twisting facts to score political points.
Meanwhile, Senator Ted Cruz addressed the controversy on his podcast. He warned that conservatives could eventually regret setting such a dangerous precedent. Additionally, Cruz claimed that the FCC had threatened to cancel ABC’s license over Kimmel’s remarks.
In contrast, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr defended the local stations that stopped airing the show. According to Carr, affiliates like Nexstar and Sinclair acted responsibly and in the public’s best interest. Carr emphasized that broadcasters must meet certain standards. “We walked away from those obligations,” he said. “And the country is worse off because of it.”
The White House responded swiftly. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt insisted that neither President Biden nor Harris pressured ABC. She said the decision came entirely from network executives.
Still, critics remain skeptical. This controversy follows earlier reports of government influence over online platforms. In 2021, Jen Psaki admitted the White House flagged “problematic posts” during the pandemic.
In August 2024, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed that the Biden-Harris administration pressured Facebook to censor posts. His admission came in a letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan. That letter followed the release of thousands of internal documents. These were part of a broader investigation into censorship on social media platforms.
