A devastating Maryland home fire claimed six lives, including four children. The fire broke out in a residence located on Declaration Court North in Waldorf, about 23 miles southeast of Washington, D.C.
Firefighters from the Waldorf Volunteer Fire Department arrived quickly after receiving reports of a large fire with people trapped inside. They immediately upgraded the response to a two-alarm fire. Soon, nearby departments joined the effort, along with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and Deputy State Fire Marshals.
Master Deputy State Fire Marshal Oliver Alkire said firefighters battled the devastating Maryland home fire for nearly an hour before gaining control. The Maryland State Fire Marshal announced that six people had died in the blaze.
Nine people lived in the home, Alkire explained. Initially, three victims were confirmed dead. However, officials continued searching the scene for three others who were missing. One adult escaped the fire, while two others were not at home when the fire started.
Over 70 firefighters responded to the scene. One firefighter suffered an injury and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Investigators believe the fire may have started on an enclosed porch on the right side of the house.
Bill Smith, a public information officer for Charles County Volunteer Fire and EMS, expressed how rare such a tragic loss is in their area. He described the event as “pretty devastating” given the lives lost.
The medical examiner’s office will release the victims’ names and ages soon. Meanwhile, the Office of the Fire Marshal confirmed no evidence of a criminal act has surfaced. They continue to examine all possible accidental causes while keeping the scene active into the evening.
Acting State Fire Marshal Jason M. Mowbray expressed deep sorrow over the devastating Maryland home fire. He extended condolences to the families and urged the community to support one another during this difficult time. He also reinforced the importance of fire safety to prevent future tragedies.
Investigators remain focused on determining the exact cause of the fire. The community mourns as authorities work to piece together what led to this heartbreaking event.
