Gmail Adds New Mark As Read Button to Notifications

Google has introduced a useful update to Gmail for Android users, adding a new Mark As Read button in Gmail notifications. This feature allows users to mark emails as read directly from the notification, without opening the app. It is a simple yet powerful tool designed to improve email management.

Previously, users could tap a notification to open an email, or swipe to archive or delete it. Now, the Mark As Read button in Gmail notifications appears alongside those options. It sits between the Archive/Delete button and the Reply button, making it easy to find. This small change helps users quickly clear unread emails without launching Gmail.

For many, this new button may seem minor, but it will significantly impact those who receive many emails daily. Instead of opening each email or delaying management, users can simply tap the new button to mark messages as read. Consequently, this helps keep the inbox tidy and reduces confusion over unread counts.

Google started rolling out this feature slowly, testing it with select users. However, the update has now reached all Android Gmail users. To access this new functionality, users only need to update their Gmail app to version 2025.08.04.x or later. No additional setup or settings changes are necessary.

Alongside the Mark As Read button in Gmail notifications, Google also released the Material 3 Expressive update for Gmail. While the new design refresh enhances the app’s look and feel, the new button directly improves email handling speed.

At present, users cannot customize the button or move its position in the notification. The app still lets users choose between Archive or Delete swipe actions, but the new button is fixed. Google may allow further customization in the future, but for now, users will have to adapt.

Overall, this update makes managing Gmail on Android more convenient. With the Mark As Read button in Gmail notifications, users can keep their inbox organized with fewer taps. It simplifies email triage and helps maintain productivity throughout the day.
