A 19-year-old college student died after a tragic shooting at a Michigan house party on May 9.
The incident happened around 11 p.m. in Tallmadge Township, just west of Grand Rapids.
Connor Lotterman, a 19-year-old college student at Grand Valley State University, attended the party with about 20 others.
According to investigators, the shooter fired several rounds from an upstairs bedroom during the gathering.
As a result, one of the bullets struck Lotterman in the head.
Meanwhile, partygoers quickly called for emergency help after hearing the gunfire.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after and transported Lotterman to a nearby hospital.
Unfortunately, doctors could not save him, and he passed away on Saturday, May 10.
Investigators identified the shooter as a 20-year-old male who knew others at the party.
Moreover, police confirmed the shooter aimed downward and fired intentionally through the floor.
Captain Jake Sparks of the Ottawa County Detective Bureau said this act was far from accidental.
In fact, he described the shooting as “quite intentional” due to the number of shots fired.
Additionally, Sparks noted that alcohol likely played a major role in the incident.
Therefore, the investigation now focuses on the shooter’s actions and decision-making that night.
Authorities are actively preparing evidence to support possible criminal charges.
The shooter remains under close investigation while prosecutors evaluate the case.
Later, Grand Valley State University released a statement expressing sorrow over the loss of the 19-year-old college student.
The university also encouraged students to seek emotional support through campus counseling services.
In addition, faculty and staff can access mental health resources during this difficult time.
Sparks urged firearm owners to take extra care when storing weapons at home.
He emphasized the importance of gun safes, locks, and separating firearms from ammunition.
Ultimately, he believes responsible storage can prevent senseless tragedies like this.
This heartbreaking death of a 19-year-old college student shook the local community deeply.
Friends, classmates, and loved ones continue to mourn his sudden and devastating loss.
